Can You Combine Resale and Direct DVC Points? Rules Every Owner Should Know

Resale vs Direct DVC Points: Can You Combine Them?

One of the most common questions Disney Vacation Club (DVC) owners and buyers ask is whether resale and direct DVC points can be combined.

The short answer is yes—but there are important limitations every owner should understand.

If you are thinking about buying both resale and direct contracts (or already own them), here is exactly how combining resale and direct DVC points works.

The Short Answer

✔️ Yes — you can combine resale and direct DVC points in one account

No — you cannot always use them interchangeably for every resort

Because of these rules, understanding how the system works helps you avoid booking surprises and maximize the value of your DVC membership.

How Combining Resale and Direct DVC Points Works

If you own both resale and direct DVC contracts with the same Use Year and title, Disney places the points in the same membership account.

As a result:

• All points appear together in your DVC account
• You can bank and borrow points normally
• You can combine points from multiple contracts for one reservation
• You can use points from several contracts for the same stay

Therefore, from an account management perspective, Disney Vacation Club treats your points as one pool.

However, restrictions might apply when you choose which resort to book.

Resort Booking Rules: What DVC Owners Need to Know

The ability to combine resale and direct points depends on which DVC resort you want to book.

Original DVC Resorts (Pre-2019)

First, resale points can be used freely at the original Disney Vacation Club resorts, including:

• Disney’s Old Key West Resort
• Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa
• Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas
• Disney’s BoardWalk Villas
• Disney’s Beach Club Villas
• Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort
• Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows & Island Tower
• Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
• Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
• The Villas at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa
• Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort
• Disney’s Vero Beach Resort
• The Villas at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
• Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa

✔️ At these resorts, resale and direct points can be combined without restrictions.

Because of this flexibility, many DVC owners choose resale contracts at these resorts.

Newer DVC Resorts (2019 and Later)

However, Disney introduced new resale restrictions starting with Disney’s Riviera Resort.

As a result, resale contracts purchased after January 19, 2019, cannot be used to book certain newer resorts.

These include:

• Disney’s Riviera Resort
• Villas at Disneyland Hotel
• The Cabins at Fort Wilderness (DVC)
• Any potential future resort

Therefore:

✔️ Only direct DVC points can be used to book these restricted resorts.

There is another important detail to understand when purchasing resale points at the newer Disney Vacation Club resorts.

If you buy a resale contract at Disney’s Riviera Resort, The Cabins at Fort Wilderness, or The Villas at Disneyland Hotel, those points come with additional restrictions.

Specifically, resale points at these 3 resorts cannot be used to book other Disney Vacation Club resorts.

Because of this rule, owners who purchase these properties on the resale market can only use their points at that specific resort.

However, these owners still have the option to exchange their points through Interval International, which allows them to trade them for vacations at destinations outside the Disney Vacation Club system.

In other words, if you purchase one of these 3 newer resorts through resale, your points are limited to that specific resort or Interval International exchanges, and they cannot be used at other Disney Vacation Club resorts.

Can You Combine Points for DVC Member Perks?

Direct ownership can also unlock exclusive Disney Vacation Club perks.

For example, direct members may qualify for:

• Moonlight Magic events
• Access to DVC Member Lounges
• Dining and merchandise discounts
• Special ticket offers
• Exclusive previews and events

However, resale points alone do not qualify for these benefits.

That said, there is an important advantage:

If you own even a small direct contract, Disney grants these perks to your entire membership, which may include resale points.

Why Many DVC Owners Use a Hybrid Strategy

Because of these rules, many experienced Disney Vacation Club owners follow a hybrid ownership strategy.

For example, they may:

• Purchase most of their points through resale to save money
• Add a direct contract to unlock member perks
• Use direct points when booking restricted resorts like Riviera

As a result, this approach often provides the best balance of flexibility, perks, and savings.

Key Takeaways

✔️ Resale and direct DVC points can be combined in one account
✔️ You can use them together at the original 14 Disney Vacation Club resorts
❌ Resale points cannot book newer restricted resorts (2019 and later)
✔️ Direct ownership unlocks DVC member perks

Combining resale and direct Disney Vacation Club points can be a smart ownership strategy. However, understanding the rules is essential.

When you know where your points can and cannot be used, you can:

• Plan vacations more effectively
• Avoid booking frustrations
• Maximize the value of your membership

Whether you are buying your first DVC contract or adding points to your membership, understanding the difference between resale and direct points matters.
