Buying a Disney Vacation Club (DVC) resale contract is one of the best ways to save thousands of dollars on Disney vacations. In many cases, buyers can purchase the exact same membership for 40% to 60% less than buying directly from Disney.
However, Disney has introduced several DVC resale restrictions over the years that every buyer should understand before purchasing. While resale contracts still provide tremendous value, knowing which restrictions apply can help you choose the right contract for your family’s vacation goals.
In this guide, we’ll explain the complete timeline of Disney Vacation Club resale restrictions, what you can and can’t do with resale points in 2026, and which contracts offer the greatest flexibility.
Disney Vacation Club Resale Restrictions Timeline
March 2011 – Disney Collection Restrictions
In March 2011, Disney introduced the first resale restriction.
Resale Buyers CAN:
- Stay at any Disney Vacation Club resort.
- Exchange points through Interval International.
- Enjoy any Membership Extra or discount offered to Members (AKA Blue Card benefits)
Resale Buyers CANNOT:
Use points for the Disney Collection, including:
- Disney Cruise Line
- Disney hotels outside of DVC
- Tokyo Disney Resort
- Disneyland Paris
- Adventures by Disney
- National Geographic Expeditions
- Concierge Collection luxury hotels
This marked the first time Disney separated resale memberships from direct purchases.
April 2016 – Membership Extras (“Blue Card”) Restrictions
Beginning in April 2016, any new resale buyer lost access to Membership Extras (formerly known as Blue Card benefits). Previous resale buyers were grandfathered in and did not lose this benefit.
These benefits include:
- Certain Dining discounts
- Certain Merchandise discounts
- Select Annual Pass offers
- Moonlight Magic events
- Member lounges
- Special promotional offers
It’s important to remember that these are considered optional perks and can change at any time, even for direct Disney purchasers.
January 2019 – New Resort Restrictions
The newest change arrived in January 2019.
Disney divided its resorts into two categories:
Original DVC Resorts
Resale buyers at these resorts may still stay at any of the original 14 Disney Vacation Club resorts. You would have an 11-month booking window at your home resort (the resort you own) and a 7-month booking window at any of the other unrestricted DVC resorts below.
- Animal Kingdom Villas
- Aulani
- Bay Lake Tower
- Beach Club Villas
- BoardWalk Villas
- Boulder Ridge Villas
- Copper Creek Villas
- Grand Californian
- Grand Floridian
- Hilton Head Island
- Old Key West
- Polynesian Villas
- Saratoga Springs
- Vero Beach
Next Generation Resorts
The following resorts have additional resale restrictions:
- Disney’s Riviera Resort
- Villas at Disneyland Hotel
- The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort
- Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge (opening in Summer of 2027)
And possibly any future Disney Vacation Club resort.
So, What Can You Do with DVC Resale Points in 2026?
If You Buy at any of the Original 14 DVC Resort
You can:
- Book your home resort up to 11 months in advance.
- Book any other original DVC resort at the 7-month window before arrival.
- Exchange through Interval International.
- Save thousands or 40%-60% compared to purchasing directly from Disney.
You cannot:
- Stay at Riviera using resale points.
- Stay at Villas at Disneyland Hotel.
- Stay at The Cabins at Fort Wilderness.
- Stay at future restricted DVC resorts.
- Receive Membership Extras.
- Use Disney Collection benefits.
If You Buy a Restricted Resort Resale
If you purchase a resale contract at Riviera, Disneyland Hotel, or Fort Wilderness Cabins, your points may only be used at that specific home resort.
For example:
- Riviera resale points can only stay at Riviera.
- Disneyland Hotel resale points can only be used at Disneyland Hotel.
- Fort Wilderness resale points can only stay at Fort Wilderness Cabins.
These points cannot be used at the original 14 Disney Vacation Club resorts.
Should You Buy a Resale at One of the Original 14 DVC Locations?
For many buyers, the answer is yes.
Purchasing at one of the original Disney Vacation Club resorts still provides tremendous flexibility. You’ll be able to vacation at nearly the entire original DVC system while paying significantly less than Disney’s direct pricing.
The original Disney Vacation Club resorts remain among the most popular locations and offer HUGE savings when purchased resale verse directly from Disney.
Who Should Buy Riviera or Disneyland Hotel Resale?
Restricted resale contracts make sense if you:
- Plan to vacation at one resort most of the time.
- Love Riviera, Disneyland Hotel, or Fort Wilderness Campgrounds
- Want to maximize your savings compared to buying direct.
- Understand the long-term resale restrictions.
Many Riviera resale contracts sell for roughly 50% less than Disney’s direct prices, making them an outstanding value for buyers who love that resort.
Smart Buying Strategy
Many experienced Disney Vacation Club members purchase an unrestricted resale contract first.
Later, they might add a smaller Riviera, Disneyland Hotel, or Fort Wilderness contract if they know they’ll visit those resorts regularly and have a few extra points to use there.
This strategy provides maximum booking flexibility while still taking advantage of excellent resale pricing.
Is Buying Disney Vacation Club Resale Still Worth It?
Absolutely.
Even with today’s Disney Vacation Club resale restrictions, resale remains one of the smartest ways to become a DVC member.
Most buyers save thousands of dollars by purchasing through the secondary market while still enjoying vacations at many of Disney’s most popular Deluxe resorts.
