Remembering the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights
As we get ready for the Christmas season, I can’t help but think back to the nights my wife and daughters spent with me at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. As locals, we always went before the holiday crowds arrived. One of our favorite traditions was watching the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights. The memories of walking through those glowing streets still feel magical today.
How the Osborne Lights Began
The Osborne Lights started far from Florida. In 1986, a businessman named Jennings Osborne from Little Rock, Arkansas, began decorating his home after his daughter, Breezy, wished for more Christmas lights. What began as a small family display quickly grew into something huge.
Every year, the Osborne family added more lights—millions of them. The show became so bright and so large that it covered several acres and drew massive crowds. Eventually, the traffic and popularity created problems for the neighborhood. In 1995, the Arkansas Supreme Court ordered the Osborne family to shut the display down.

How the Lights Found a Home at Disney
That same year, Walt Disney World stepped in with a solution. Disney offered to bring the entire display to Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios). The Osborne family agreed, and the lights made their Disney debut during the 1995 holiday season.
Originally, the lights were set up on Residential Street, a backlot area used for filming. Each year, the show grew. Disney added artificial snow, more music, and eventually computer-controlled synchronization. The lights didn’t just shine—they danced to Christmas songs.

Moving and Improving the Display
In 2004, Residential Street was removed to make way for a new attraction. Instead of ending the display, Disney moved it to the Streets of America. The technology improved again. Disney switched to energy-efficient LED bulbs and added even more detailed programming. The lights flashed, sparkled, and swayed perfectly in time with the music.
Why the Osborne Lights Became So Loved
For many families, including mine, the Osborne Lights were more than a holiday decoration. They were a tradition. People returned year after year because the display created a sense of joy, warmth, and community. Walking through those streets surrounded by millions of glowing lights felt like stepping inside the spirit of Christmas.

The Final Season
In 2015, Disney announced that the Osborne Lights would end to make room for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The final performance took place on January 6, 2016. Fans from all over the world came to say goodbye, along with members of the Osborne family. It was emotional, beautiful, and unforgettable.
A Holiday Legacy That Lives On
Although the lights are gone, their legacy still shines bright. For over twenty years, the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights brought holiday magic to millions of guests. It remains one of the most beloved traditions in Walt Disney World history, and those memories warm our hearts every Christmas season.
