Understanding Banked Points When Buying a Disney Vacation Club (DVC) Membership

If you’re new to Disney Vacation Club or considering becoming a Member, understanding how banked points work can help you make the most of your DVC Membership—especially when purchasing a resale contract.

In this article, we’ll explain what banking DVC points means, how the banking deadlines work, and why listings with banked points can offer extra value when you’re shopping for the perfect DVC contract.

What Does It Mean to Bank Your DVC Points?

Banking your points means moving unused points from your current Use Year into the next Use Year. This gives you more flexibility by allowing those points to be used for future vacations rather than letting them expire.

For example, if you didn’t use all your points this year or have some left after making a reservation, banking allows you to save those remaining points for your next trip. However, if you don’t bank them before the deadline, they’ll expire at the end of your current Use Year (if you don’t use them).

What Is a Use Year?

Your Use Year is the month when your annual allotment of points is added to your DVC account. For example, if you have a February Use Year, your points are deposited on February 1st and are valid for 12 months—unless you bank them.

Use Years do not refer to when you can travel or start booking when using your points, but rather when your points hit your account / Membership annually and when they expire each year. The Use Year always starts or ends on the first day of the month it’s allocated to.

DVC Use Year months:

  • February
  • March
  • April
  • June
  • August
  • September
  • October
  • December

Banking Deadlines by Use Year

You have eight months from the start of your Use Year to bank unused points into the next year. After that banking window passes, those points must be used by the end of that use year window, or they will expire.

For example, if you have a February Use year and have remaining points that were not banked by the September 30th deadline, then those remaining points must be used by February 1st of the upcoming year; otherwise, they will expire / disappear from the account, and a new allocation of points will begin.

Note: Banked points can only be used in the next Use Year—they cannot be banked again.

Why Banked Points Matter When Buying a DVC Contract

When buying a DVC resale contract, some listings include banked points from a previous Use Year. These listings can provide additional value—allowing you to book a longer stay, plan multiple trips, or upgrade to a larger villa.

Because of this added value, listings with banked points often have a slightly higher asking price. However, that can be well worth it for the added flexibility and extra vacation time.

Making an Offer on a DVC Listing

Most sellers are open to offers. While you want a good deal, it’s important not to offer too low, as Disney has the Right of First Refusal (ROFR) on resale contracts. If the price is too far below market value, Disney may step in and purchase the contract themselves.

As a general rule, consider offering around $5–$10 less per point than the asking price, depending on the resort and point availability. Our team can help guide you on making a competitive offer that’s attractive to the seller while still being a great value for you.
