When Is It Time to Sell Your DVC Membership?

Disney Vacation Club is more than a purchase — it’s an investment in memories, family traditions, and unforgettable vacations. For many Members, DVC creates generational happiness, which is why deciding to sell can feel emotional and overwhelming.

It’s completely normal to question whether it’s the right time or the right decision.

After more than 30 years of selling DVC and helping thousands of families, we’ve seen that while the decision is personal, there are several common situations where selling makes sense.

Below are the most frequent reasons Members decide it’s time to sell their DVC membership.

Signs It May Be Time to Sell Your DVC

You’re Not Using Your Membership

If you’re booking trips for friends or family just to avoid losing points — or worse, letting points expire — your membership may no longer fit your lifestyle.

DVC should enhance your vacations, not feel like a chore.

The Cost No Longer Fits Your Budget

Annual dues increase over time. If the cost feels financially restrictive or stressful, selling can free up cash while still allowing you to travel in different ways.

Your Travel Style Has Changed

Many Members find their travel habits change over the years, including:

  • Health or mobility concerns
  • Living farther from Disney than before
  • Lifestyle changes since the original purchase

If traveling isn’t as easy or enjoyable as it once was, selling may be the right step.

Life Changes Require a Sale

Major life events can impact ownership, such as:

  • Divorce or legal requirements to sell
  • Removing one owner from the deed
  • Estate or family planning decisions

In these cases, selling may be necessary or simply the cleanest solution.

You Have More Points Than You Need

If you own multiple contracts or more points than you realistically use, downsizing can be a smart option. Many Members sell part of their ownership while keeping a smaller contract.

Decisions: Keep, Rent, Sell?

You Have Options — Not Just “Sell or Keep”

Selling isn’t always an immediate decision.

Depending on your situation, it may make sense to:

  • Rent your points for a year or two and then decide what’s best
  • Sell part – If you own multiple DVC contracts, you may have the option to sell one or more individual contracts rather than your entire membership. Disney does not allow owners to sell a portion of a single deed; however, each contract is its own independent deed. This means you can sell specific contracts while keeping the rest of your membership intact, which can be a great option for downsizing while still enjoying DVC benefits.
  • Sell immediately if timing and value align

Every situation is different, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.
